Review: Tony’s Spaghetti

Since the first time I tasted the breakfast, eggs benedict in 2014 at a well-known franchise cafe, I have made it a point to try it as many times as I can. If you don’t know what it is, let me fill you in. The eggs benedict comes in many variations but my favourite is the soft poached egg over smoked or normal salmon on a lightly toasted English muffin covered in a creamy hollandaise sauce.

The hollandaise sauce is a egg based sauce, with butter and a hint of lemon. I think I have tried this same breakfast a hundred times at different restaurants around South Africa and I must say that my search for the best eggs benedict is coming to an end based on my experience:

Introducing, the closest to perfect eggs benedict I have ever tried. I am lucky enough to have this restaurant less than 5 kilometers away from my house and work.

Tony’s Spaghetti in Randpark Ridge, Johannesburg is an Italian restaurant known for their wood fired pizza, excellent pastas and really extensive wine list. I am a huge fan. Please try their starter mussels if you’re ever there. On a whim, I had their breakfast with my fiance one day and I was not disappointed. Just like their lunch/dinner menu, their breakfast was just a delicious.

I love experienced restaurants that make the food exactly to your specification. I always order soft poached egg for my eggs benedict and they make it perfect, where the albumin is fully cooked but the yolk is still runny. You can always count on the freshness of their English muffins and salmon but the most valuable element to this meal is their hollandaise sauce. It’s creamy, thick and they are not stingy with the portion they give you.

There’s no need to comment on their service. It does look like they treat their staff well. I think coming from a short stint as a waitress in a horrible restaurant in my teens taught me to really look at how happy the staff is. It resonates in their interaction with their customers and that is a relief because I would not come back to a restaurant that mistreats their staff, no matter how great the food is. But, alas I have to give management 10 points for their management style.

It’s always an adventure at Tony’s Spaghetti because they mix great service with excellent food. You’ll probably always hear me rave about this restaurant. I always believed that I’m one sixteenth Italian because Tony’s knows how to bring it out. I think I’ve mimicked like 4 of their meals that I’ve tried.

It was great to introduce my friends to Tony’s as I know they will come back for more!

For what it’s worth, I give Tony’s Spaghetti 89 LadyVera points!
