This last Thursday I went to another one of Wine Connects Meet up at Gorge Krammerville. One this lovely warm evening, we were invited to sit on their upstairs area which overlooked the whole of Sandton, if you were sitting at the right spot.
This wine connect was hosted by Simonsig and Jack Black beer (which has no affiliation to the American Actor). Not really a beer fan, but my guests certainly were. Started off with a welcome drink, their MCC Brut from Simonsig. I’ve always maintained that I’m only a red wine fan, but lately I have been expanding my pallet to include the MCC’s and the Rosé’s of the world.
We started off with the beer and from what I remember, the Killer Pils, one of their latest additions to their beer family, was my favourite and was paired with a pear sandwich that consisted of the pear being the “bread” part and it was filled with blue cheese, topped off with half a walnut. The combination alone is enough to make anyone melt. Perfectly paired to compliment each other.
The wine sommelier for Simonsig did not make an appearance, but we still were able to enjoy 3 of their best wines. I was a little disappointed that there was no cab sauv on the list, as I know that I would have bought at least a case of that. But not to deter from the excellent pairing, they still managed to impress with their shiraz being paired with a stuffed yorkshire pudding with some rare roast beef , ailoli and rocket topped off. That was my favourite on the wine side.
Although the setting, hosts and organisers made what could’ve been a simple night, magical, I was not that impressed with the wine. Knowing me, you know that it does not stop at this first impression. I will still go and try a lot more of their wines before I completely right them off.
With my Fiancé and two friends as my guests for the day, I must say that we were impressed with the food that Gorge makes.
After the pairing, we were invited to order from the menu and I picked their snack pot that consisted of salmon, avocado, rocket and lemon juice, which Was incredibly tasty. I could not find fault in their food.
Now that I know there is a Gorge near where I work, I’ll go back for their snack pot and see what else I can get from there.
Thank you again Chef Phillipe and Chef Jeff for this evening. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us this weekend.
