A Lady Vera year is never complete without popping into the Mother City. Usually, my trip consists of spending my days on wine farms tasting some of the best vino this country has to offer but this time, it went a little different. Two years ago, my friends from the UK sent us an invite to their wedding. To my delight, the location was Cape Town so I knew that I had to extend this trip a little longer so I can experience more of this beautiful city.
On the South African version of My Kitchen Rules, fan favourites G and OG from Cape Town captured South Africa’s hearts and taste buds. While fierce competitors, they didn’t win but that never stopped them from pursuing their culinary dreams. I started following them on Twitter to see if they were going to actually do something cooking related after the show. They decided to open up a restaurant in central Cape Town.
The Hot Skillet is set inside an art development centre called Youngblood. It showcases some of the most beautiful art and photography that has such emotive and thought-provoking messages behind it. I can’t explain how beautiful the entire setting is. On the bottom floor is the actual restaurant where a starving Vera got to meet her food fans.

Now lets get down to business. If you’ve read a lot of my stories, you will know by now that when it comes to breakfast, you have to serve eggs benedict. Not only that, the most important part of the meal is not the poached egg (although it is an important component), the hollandaise sauce is! So when I heard that the Hot Skillet has this on the menu, I knew I had to try it.

It’s not that many times that a sauce makes me jump out my seat but this was one time that I had to compose myself. I’ve always said that the perfect hollandaise sauce has to be creamy, it should not separate, should be slightly seasoned and the chef can’t be shy with the amount they pour. This sauce was exactly what I expected and more. My love for this meal didn’t end there. Our perfectly poached egg was nestled on a Portuguese roll not an English muffin. This was a great twist to this classic meal that warranted my seal of approval. You can’t really see this place however, for your convenience, you can’t find it on Google here: The Hot Skillet.
I heard from G that this place often hosts wine pairings and private events. I know that if I was a local Capetonian, this place would be a regular for me.

Very excited to see this place grow as they fill your tummies with delicious food.
