Something fishy: Fishermans Deli

Just before the Easter weekend, I spent the entire week in Cape Town working and attending a friend’s wedding. Every night we went out to eat and steak or lamb chops was my choice of protein. I got over the whole meat thing when I returned home and started planning how I was going to feed my fish craving. Just so you know, I am talking about everything (legal) that lives in the sea, from the ever-so-popular South African favourites like hake and snoek to even those little sea scavengers, prawns.

After hearing about this place from family and scouring the internet to see their prices, I decided I would finally pay Fisherman’s Deli a visit. Originally I was only going to go to the Dunkheld store but I found out that there’s one around the corner from my house in Northriding.

Set on a corner in an industrial park is the branch closest to my house. I was surprised to see that they have a restaurant in there too. With the smell drawing me closer to the entrance I hopped and skipped along into the deli. With so many fish to try, I tried looking for the most interesting buys. I settled on, what looked like a giant golden marble titled ‘Salmon pearl’. Upon consulting Dr Google, I found that these are really delicious balls of salmon pate. The taste was something else tho. Too lemony for my liking. It over-powered the salmon taste which really didn’t sit well with my palate.

At the second Fisherman’s Deli is hidden next to the popular Fournos bakery in Dunkheld. I met the manager Gordon, who made my shopping experience 100% worth the visit.

I also watched him interact with other customers and he knew so many of them, shows he cares about his job. I guess he would be the best advocate of fish since he is a pescatarian. Seeing how affordable different types of fish is inspired me to go meat-free for a week. I think I’ll wait for pay day to start that because I want to go all out for this week, including lobster etc.

My unique buy at this store were smoked trout stars. So I thought they would be like the salmon pearls because they had lemon in it but they were surprisingly delicious. The lemon was majorly toned down which highlighted the cream cheese flavour. Way better than the salmon pearls!
