Winter wines for 2018

If you’re in the southern hemisphere, you can already feel that it’s getting darker earlier and it’s darker in the mornings. We’re clearly entering winter which means your drink preference should change too.

This past summer was one of the hottest ever. I spent most of days drinking semi sweet white wine and throwing in as much ice as possible. But as the earth rotates and we swap sandals for boots, something else has to be swapped out, our drinks.

When in the mood for a drink while you cook supper, I suggest going a little more bold and sipping on some dry red with less of a smokey taste.

As you can easily guess from the name, Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect spontaneous mix between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc and it contains the best characteristics of both.

Cabernet Sauvignon is a fine, sumptuous and sophisticated wine that defies time and ages with magnificent elegance. Strong tannins give this wine a surprising body structure and this is why drinking Cab is an unique and gratifying experience for all the senses (winedharma.com)

About a year a go, I visited Darling Cellars. When I came across their wine a week ago, I knew I should try it out. Buying this wine came at the perfect time because it just happened to be a really cold weekend where no one wanted to leave the house.

This particular bottle was a blend between cab sav and merlot meaning that it was a little more fuller in taste and the colour was slightly darker.  Nevertheless, this was a bottle that I totally had to write about.

If you do not want to stray away from the white wine, I suggest you stop whining about it and head over to the store and get yourself a bottle of Pongracz Brut. As you may know, brut means dry and if you know the Pongracz brand, then you know that it is a Méthode Cap Classique from South Africa.

This particular blend is a mixture of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes which are handpicked from vineyards cooled by maritime breezes and selected for their overall quality and suitability.

So I’ve given you a red and white that you can enjoy really well this winter while you’re cuddled up next to the fireplace.
