Without even sounding pretentious, I just wanted to let people know that it really takes about 3 hours of your time and you can feed a lot of people. For the meat the porridge and gravy. One meal was all it took make me cry.
Last year I took 2 days off to get blankets and deliver them to the homeless. To be honest, it took a lot from me not to burst out into tears with every blanket I gave out. This time, I decided to join my father (who does this a lot) and hand out food to the homeless. He lives in Pretoria West and in the near industrial area is a lot of areas where the homeless live. Just follow the smoke to small fires and you will find cluster of people living together.
I can’t tell you how heart breaking it was to see people digging in dustbins, stop what they were doing and devour the food you gave them. It is really heart breaking that someone can starve to that extent.
I always said my life is blessed because I have never been cold nor have a I starved. Life is crazy, we stress a lot however we are blessed, we are truly blessed. Just like last year, I challenge everyone who reads this to step out of your comfort zone and help someone in need.
I had Wits University students shadow me last year, and here’s the video they made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bftSg7Xy6xA
I didn’t take any photos of the homeless, it didn’t feel right.
