I was going to only share my love for mac n cheese with red wine, when I came across some interesting facts about this particular red wine from the popular Four Cousins brand.
After the alcohol restrictions in lockdown were lifted (before they put them back on again), I quickly headed online to re-stock my wine collection. Van Loveren were offering free delivery if you ordered 12 bottles so I ordered the Four Cousins cabernet sauvignon and from another brand listed on their online shop. By chance, when I opened the first bottle, I was making mac n cheese for the kids and while sipping and taste testing the food, I stuck gold.
I don’t know if it’s the cheese or the creamy texture, but paired with that bottle of wine, it was like a symphony in my mouth. Obviously as a blogger, I wanted to tell the world about this new thing I discovered. Yes, I said discovered. Then I stumbled upon some amazing info about this wine that I makes me want to buy more of the other varietals.
One of South Africa’s favourites, Four Cousins, now conveniently offers its range of popular single cultivar wines all under one label. Fresh from a revamp and re-shuffle, the excellent range made by Four Cousins has banded together as the Four Cousins Collection.
What has been said about the Cabernet Sauvignon: Rich chocolate and mocha toastiness on the nose with a ripe blackcurrant palate.
Now that I have tried and loved the Cabernet Sauvignon, I wanted to find out more about the rest of the collection and this is what I found:
The Chardonnay is a medium-bodied wine with an aroma of fresh grapefruit and flavour of creamy citrus-vanilla. Fresh and fragrant, the Sauvignon blanc has tropical fruit on the nose and ripe figs in the mouth.
As for the reds, aromatics in the Merlot are gentle berry and vanilla toastiness with a typical Merlot mulberry and summer fruit palate. Rich chocolate and mocha toastiness are revealed in the aromas of the Cabernet Sauvignon with every sip revealing flavours reminiscent of ripe blackcurrants.
The Pinotage, which is a cultivar developed right here in South Africa and has since spread to the world, shows beautiful strawberry and black cherry on the nose while rich layers of dark fruit, vanilla and spice characterise its flavour.
he Four Cousins Collection is available online from www.fourcousins.co.za or via amongst others, Makro, Ultra Liquors, selected Spar stores, Food Lovers Market and Kaap Agri.
