Your cutlery tells a story

I found myself in a heated debate with my fiancé on table etiquette but in particular, how to signal to the waiter that you are done with your meal without having to call him.

We even enlisted the help of one of the waiters who could not confirm any of our rules. To let the waiter know that you are done with the meal, whether or not your plate is empty, I put the knife and fork together in the middle of the plate. I was met with another rule from my fiancé who said you should place the heads of the knife and fork together but their bodies should lie apart, almost to create a triangle. The waiter was clueless so, the proud Googler that I am decided to tackle every site that I could handle to find the truth.

Just to add in, I only started playing on my phone after dinner and not at the dinner table because you know that’s one of my pet peeves.

Here’s the trend I saw on many sites:

I read about Continental style and American styles but I am more familiar with the Continental so this blog refers to that.

I am unfamiliar with the second plate or do not like but the others I know very well.

But just so we all know, I won the debate, I was right.

From a young age, my mum taught me “Barbie’s legs” – if I was finished eating, I always wanted to go play with my dolls again so to show it my cutlery had to be put together on my plate, straight and tight together like a Barbies’ legs

I passed it onto my cousins (except for the boys it was action man’s legs) and now all of us have agreed to teach our children the same! Basic table manners set the tone for any dinner whether in the home or out

I always love interesting ways of teaching kids things. It sticks in their minds just like this example you gave me.
